Beginning at 8:30 AM Police Officers from around the Morgan County area will meet on the front steps of Decatur City Hall. After a brief introduction of this year’s event and some special sponsors of the event, the Law Enforcement Officers joined by Special Olympic athletes will run the Law Enforcement Torch for Special Olympics from Decatur City Hall to the Wal-Mart Super Center located on Spring Ave in Decatur. Upon arrival at the Wal-Mart (at approximately 9:30 AM) Decatur Police Department’s Officers Juan Penuelas and Mike Hazel along with Rocket 95.1’s “Fish” from the “Go Fish morning Show” will be stationed on the roof of Wal-Mart and will remain there while attempting to obtain donations for Special Olympics thru Saturday, May 3rd at 11:00 PM.

Such as the Decatur Police Chief Kenneth Collier, Morgan County Sheriff Greg Bartlett and other elected Officials. There will be a number of local bands and musicians performing during the event at Wal-Mart throughout the day Friday and Saturday.
We have planned for there to be several attractions on-site during the fund raiser to include a visit from the Alabama State Trooper Helicopter, Jumping gyms for the kids, and event sponsor “Extreme Marine” will be on site displaying a few of their boats and skis. We expect a large turnout for all these attractions and welcome everyone to come join in the fun while supporting this worth while cause.
Our Law Enforcement Community has developed a special connection to “Special Olympics” athletes. That interaction has changed our lives and motivated us as a group to give of our money and time, to promote “Special Olympics”. In doing so we’ve learned that these wonderful individuals have so much more to give to us than we can ever hope to give to them. If you don’t understand that statement, I challenge you to get involved in “Special Olympics” and you soon will!
Please come out and support this event. To learn more about the Alabama Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics you can go to the state web site at http://www.alabamaletr.com/

Old State Bank Program to focus on “Alabama’s Most Famous 19th Century Outlaws”
Program to take place on March 16, 2008 at 2:00 PM
The year 2008 marks the 175th anniversary of Decatur’s Old State Bank and everyone is invited to visit the Old State Bank and discover the fascinating stories from the City’s past! Throughout the year, educational and entertaining programs and events are being planned to celebrate the history of this cherished landmark.
A free public program on “Alabama’s Most Famous 19th Century Outlaws” will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, March 16, 2008. One of the most famous, yet false, legends of the Old State Bank is that Jesse James robbed the building. Come help us separate fact from fiction and learn the true stories of seven of Alabama’s most famous 19th century outlaws. Explore the historical accounts and legends of Railroad Bill, Rube Burrow, James Copeland, Jesse and Frank James, John Murrell, Steve Renfroe and Bob Sims. Guest speaker for the program is Dr. Alan Brown, professor of English at the University of West Alabama. A traveling exhibit will accompany Brown’s presentation. This free public “Roads Scholar” program is made possible through funding from the Alabama Humanities Foundation. To provide adequate seating, guests are asked to make reservations to attend the program by calling 341-4818.
In the 19th century, Alabama was not so far removed from its frontier status, and colorful figures left an enduring mark on local history and legend. These were the days when men like Rube Burrow and Railroad Bill challenged the law and earned nicknames like the “Alabama Robin Hood.” Rube Burrow was born in Lamar County in 1854 and became an infamous train-robber throughout the South and Southwest. One time when on the run from the law, Rube stopped by a house and asked for a bite to eat. While there, the widow told him of a $700 mortgage owed on her property and that the banker was to arrive that day and foreclose on the home. Rube gave the woman the cash for the mortgage and told her to make sure she obtained a receipt for her payment. After Rube left the home, he hid in nearby woods, robbing the banker on his return trip to collect the debt and thus recovering his own money. In 1890, Rube returned to Alabama after an extensive manhunt. He was spotted by a local businessman in Linden, Alabama, who captured him and locked him in his storeroom. Though Rube managed to escape, he was fatally shot in a resulting gunfight in the streets of Linden. Another legendary Alabama outlaw is Morris Slater, better known as “Railroad Bill.” A hero of African-American folklore, “Railroad Bill” was believed to possess supernatural powers because of his ability to elude the law. Legend tells that he could change into an animal form, and that one time he transformed himself into a dog and joined the sheriff’s pack of dogs as they attempted to hunt him down. Stories tell that Railroad Bill, a skilled gunman, could shoot a hole through a dime. Like Burrow, “Railroad Bill” was also known for deeds of kindness and a Robin Hood approach to life. When he jumped freight cars, he would throw cases of food off for the poor. Killed in Atmore, Alabama in 1896, his body was put on display and could be viewed for twenty-five cents.
Dr. Alan Brown is a professor of English at the University of West Alabama. He has published and lectured extensively in the field of American literature, and in recent years, his interest in Southern folklore has resulted in several collections of Southern ghost stories, including The Face in the Window and Other Alabama Ghostlore. Find out which outlaw was serving as county sheriff when finally caught for his crime, and who was the son of a Methodist circuit preacher. Hear these stories, and many more in this free public program at the Old Bank. For more information or to make reservations, please call 341-4818. The Old State Bank is a division of the City of Decatur Parks and Recreation Department.

Point Mallard Celebrates National Figure Skating Month
Ice skating is a great way to get fit and Point Mallard Ice Complex is willing to give anyone interested a free lesson just to give it a try.
January has been declared National Figure Skating Month by U.S. Figure Skating to increase awareness and participation in ice skating sports. National Skating Month allows U.S. Figure Skating member clubs and Basic Skills programs to reach out to new members in their community by offering the fundamentals of ice skating from professionally trained instructors across the United States.
In recognition of National Figure Skating Month, Point Mallard Ice Complex will provide one free group lesson and skating exhibition on Monday, January 21st (Martin Luther King Day) from 11:00 a.m. – Noon; and on Saturday, January 26th, from 1:00 -2:30 p.m. Saturday’s class will also include a demonstration on how the Zamboni ice resurfacer works.
Point Mallard’s history on ice extends back over thirty years, when the outdoor rink was built in 1973. The indoor rink was constructed in 2001, providing year round ice skating and other frozen fun activities. The same year, the rink was introduced to skating professional, Charles Bernhard, who provides expert instruction on ice in both figure skating and basic skills hockey instruction.
Ice skating (whether hockey, figure skating, speed skating) provides excellent physical fitness. The American College of Sports Medicine says that on average, for every hour of continuous skating, a 150-pound person burns about 600 calories. That’s about the same as running five miles in an hour. The calorie burn increases to about 800 an hour by adding the basic skills of skating, which include forward and backward crossovers, turning, stopping and changing feet.
Point Mallard’s rink offers many public session times as well as a variety of classes for hockey, figure skating, ice dancing, synchronized skating, and freestyle ice for students to practice on their own. Birthday parties at the rink are also a hit among kids & adults who wish to experience a unique and festive event and the benefit of physical fitness.
Those who catch the skating bug may purchase punch cards for 6 or 12 sessions; or may purchase a new annual pass for $100.00. The new annual pass provides a credit card size badge with photo of the pass holder, valid for one full year of public session skating and free skate rental. Annual passes are not transferable.
For more information or to sign up for a free lesson, contact: Skating Pro, Charles Bernhard at (256) 341-4913
